Investigation under way after truck fire at DCT

An investigation is underway into the cause of a fire that broke out aboard a truck at Durban Container Terminal Pier 2 yesterday afternoon.

It was transporting a 12-metre export container of paper when it caught fire at the staging area, according to a statement from Transnet Port Terminals (TPT).

The 24-year-old driver said he had noticed the cabin burning when he returned from getting water.

TPT said no injuries had been sustained and there had been no spillages or damage to the truck’s container and its contents. There were also no terminal assets or staging trucks damaged.

“However, due to the extensive damage caused to the truck itself, owners of the vehicle are conducting an investigation.” Mandatory alcohol testing in line with terminal procedures yielded negative results.
