A truck laden with cement ploughed through several cars on the N1, near the 14th Avenue off-ramp, leaving five people injured, ER24 said on Friday.

“Five people were injured this morning after a truck crashed into several vehicles on the N1 highway near the 14th Avenue off-ramp, west of Johannesburg,” said Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson.

When paramedics, along with other emergency services, arrived on scene they found the highway blocked by heavy traffic.

“Numerous wrecked vehicles were spread across the scene. A truck that had been carrying cement lay at the bottom of the embankment on its side,” said Meiring.

Paramedics assessed the scene and found that only five patients had suffered minor injuries.

“Paramedics treated the patients while fire services and highway patrol began to remove and sweep up the cement spread across the scene,” said Meiring.

The injured were transported to various hospitals.

Local authorities were on scene investigating the cause of the crash.
