ANTWERPLAW ADVOCATES has expanded its South African presence with the opening of a second European Legal Desk (ELD) in Cape Town.
The Antwerp-based international law firm, specialising in international trade and transport law, previously operated only out of an office in Paarl.
“The ELD, manned by advocates trained in Europe, assists companies active in export and import to and from South Africa by providing legal advice and legal assistance on European related legal topics,” says Antwerp-based Patricia Leers.
Its expertise is not only geared to South African companies doing business with Europe, but also to its South African colleagues whose clients need help with European related legal matters.
The company has recently added a new string to its bow through its involvement in the European Recovery Network (EURENET).
This is designed to help clients, in particular freight forwarders and subrogated cargo underwriters, with all forms of recovery. These can be based on primary obligations, such as unpaid debts, or secondary obligations like claims for compensation for damage and/or losses, either contractual or in tort, and direct or indirect.
EURENET contracts are based on a pre-litigation agreement combining a basic minimum fee and a no win/no extra fee scheme.
