For a growing number of shippers using the port of Walvis Bay, there are several advantages to using an established logistics department attached to a major freight company. As shipping through Walvis Bay increases, a reliable logistics agent with knowledge of all the “ins and outs” can expedite cargo passage. “One additional value we offer that sets us apart from an ordinary clearing and forwarding company is our integrated solutions – door-to-door service, including stevedoring and warehousing,” said Patrick Kohlstaedt, general manager of logistics services for Manica Group Namibia at Walvis Bay. And this office has particular experience moving larger cargo that is much in demand to and from destinations within the African sub-continent. “Mining projects, infrastructure projects, development projects, energy projects – these all require large shipments of equipment and components,” said Kohlstaedt. Manica’s logistics department arranges shipments of copper from Zambia and DRC through the Walvis Bay Corridor and onto ships, while bringing into those countries mining and other equipment. Because of the distance, the use of Walvis Bay by SA shippers costs “just a fraction more” than using SA ports, but it’s a matter of time saved for money spent, Kohlstaedt said. “Walvis Bay is faster. This can be a real advantage to shippers of time-sensitive cargo. There is much less congestion at Walvis Bay than at the South African ports,” he said.
‘Integrated solutions’ provide the upper hand
