Industry personality dies

Laraine Baines, senior channel controller at Value Logistics, passed away on January 10 after a short illness. A well-known industry personality, she started her career at Rank Xerox as a cash book and invoicing clerk in 1972. She joined Micor Shipping four years later, the start of her 33-year career in the clearing and forwarding industry. Initially focusing on airfreight, she moved steadily up the corporate ladder, taking on the role of general manager in 2002. A year later she decided to use the skills and experience that she had gained over her 28 years with Micor and joined Value Logistics in the newly formed clearing and forwarding division. “She was a great asset and helped grow the division using her vast experience and expertise,” Value Logistics divisional director Stephen Segal told FTW. “Her strengths were in her relationships with her clients and her first goal was always to satisfy her clients’ needs, which she did successfully.” Training was also one of her strengths and most of her students have gone on to be great successes in the freight industry, says Segal. “It was often said of Laraine that she was like a dog with a bone – never letting go until it was totally finished. “She is a great loss to the industry and will be missed by her colleagues and clients.” Laraine leaves her partner Iain Mutch, children, grandchildren and great granddaughter.
