Shippers now have greater choice of how their cargo is transported between the Copperbelt and the sub-Saharan ports serving the Copperbelt. Following investment in people, systems and warehousing storage areas, the Copperbelt resources of Impala Terminals Group are now being used by leading mining companies and various multinational mining suppliers, in addition to the commodity trading Trafigura Group, according to the company’s management team. The Impala rail and road-linked terminals provide warehousing and logistics support to mines in both Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) through facilities in Ndola (Zambia), Lubumbashi and Kolwezi (DRC). In Zambia, the Ndola complex includes bonded warehousing and bulk bagging facilities in a highsecurity logistics park that caters for both road and rail transport. The company’s own locomotive runs on the three on-site rail sidings, and shunts wagons within the yard and to Bawana Makuba, the main rail junction linked to all major rail networks across the region. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, all terminals are road and rail linked. Impala Terminals has a bonded warehouse in Kolwezi and two terminals in Lubumbashi, with a second larger facility in the final stages of completion located on the main road and rail carriageway on the northern side of the city. This 80-hectare site will soon become bonded, and already handles a range of imports and exports. According to the management team, the company successfully utilises rail transportation between its terminals, the ports of Durban, Richards Bay, Dar es Salaam and Lobito. In Zambia, the focus is on helping customers meet the government’s target of 30% of the country’s production freighted by rail and they are seeing an increase in import and export volumes and improved transit times. “The company focuses on providing a logistics corridor that can supply mines and give producers options, with multiple African ports to choose from, tailoring the best solution for each customer,” according to a statement issued to FTW.
