Illicit cigarettes worth R427m seized

In a joint operation with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa (TISA) in Limpopo recently, 2 235 cartons of illegal cigarettes worth approximately R427 000 were recovered.

Members of the joint operation spotted a suspicious vehicle at Swartwater and attempted to stop it. The vehicle, a white Toyota Hi-Lux D4D, took flight and the SAPS and TISA members pursued.

After a 90km high-speed chase the suspects drove the vehicle into a game fence, abandoned it and ran off into the adjacent farm. SAPS members immediately started tracking them and were assisted by the local farmers in closing and patrolling all roads in the area. After approximately 5km the two suspects were arrested.

They were smuggling cigarettes from Musina to Lephalale area. After further investigation 2235 cartons and eight loose packets of 20s were found in the vehicle.

The VIN and engine numbers were tested and the vehicle was confirmed stolen in Vereeniging in April 2015.

Both suspects were arrested and detained in Saamboubrug for further investigation and a case docket for smuggling and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle was opened. The case is before the court.
