The Road Freight Association has warned transport operators to exercise caution when applying for roadworthy certificates. According to RFA CEO Gavin Kelly, some vehicle roadworthy centres are issuing certificates where the vehicle category is listed as “unknown”. As a result vehicles are impounded just days after receiving their certificates. This was particularly problematic in Tshwane, he said. “All freight vehicles above a certain mass or class are required to do an annual roadworthy test,” explained Kelly. “The document that is issued asks for a description of the vehicle. This is then tagged as unknown.” Kelly said trucks issued with a roadworthy describing the vehicle category as unknown were increasingly being pulled over within days of receiving the document – and then impounded for not having the correct description on the certificate. The matter, he said, had been taken up with the NRCS.
