Leonard Neill HYDRO AIR’S Boeing 747 freighter crashed on landing at Lagos Airport on Saturday morning. South Africa’s only privately owned scheduled freighter is understood to have overrun the runway and ploughed into a barrier fence. None of the nine crew members was injured, but the aircraft is understood to be damaged beyond repair. It is the only one operated by the Pretoria-based owners and flew a weekly schedule between Johannesburg, Lagos and Antwerp in Belgium. Reports received by the owners indicate that the runway was in poor condition and that all the air traffic controllers on duty at the time of the accident have been placed on indefinite suspension by the Nigerian civil aviation authorities pending a full inquiry.
