The impact of the lifting of the moratorium on high cube containers is expected to be a major talking point at this year’s Road Freight Association convention taking place at the Arabella Spa near Hermanus in the Western Cape at the end of May.
According to RFA spokesman Gavin Kelly, a panel discussion on the first day of the three-day event will provide some clarity for delegates around the current lobbying efforts by various industry groups.
Joining Kelly for the discussion are industry stalwarts Kevin Martin, Mike Walwyn and economist Mike Schüssler.
Measuring 2.9m, high cube containers, when transported on the back of a normal transport vehicle. exceed the height of 4.3m as prescribed by South African law, measuring in at around 4.6m. The Department of Transport (DoT) implemented a moratorium in 2011, providing blanket exemption.
With the moratorium ending in December 2018, the DoT is adamant that the road transport industry either meets the 4.3m height requirement or they will be prosecuted.
