'You can send messages from the Kalahari Desert if you like'

A HAND-held e-mail and GPS (Global Positioning System) is about to be launched locally offering anywhere to anywhere satellite communication.
Developed in the US and launched there just two weeks ago, the Magellan GSC 100 (Global Satellite Communi-
cator) puts worldwide, two-way, e-mail capability literally in the palm of your hand, says Simon Illingworth of Sandton-based Satellite Tracking Systems, which is marketing the system.
It features an integrated Magellan GPS receiver for positioning and navigation, enabling users to navigate and communicate from anywhere on Earth.
"You can send a message from the Kalahari Desert, and people can send messages to you anywhere in the world. It's like a two-way pager," says Illingworth.
The unit has a built-in key-pad enabling messages to be typed and sent immediately.
It will retail at around US$1400.
Satellite Tracking are agents for the unit north of the border.
