ALL WORK at the Durban Container Terminal was halted on Wednesday, August 14, after a strong south-westerly 'buster' hit the port in mid afternoon.
The high gusting winds made it dangerous for the quayside gantry cranes and the decision was made at 15:00 to stop work, which only resumed at 22:00 that evening. This has added to ongoing delays at the port, exacerbated by unusually high volumes as well as adverse weather in Cape Town, which delayed some ship arrivals.
For example the City
of Cape Town, originally scheduled to arrive in Durban on Saturday, August 11, went on
the berth only on Tuesday morning (August 14)and was expected to finish discharging and loading mid to late
afternoon Thursday.
