Despite the ongoing drought in the Western and Eastern Cape, South Africa is seeing some real growth in certain fruit exports.

“The northern parts of the country received some good rain, but there is still concern with the Eastern and Western Cape battling the drought,” said Lucien Jansen, CEO of the Perishables Products Export Control Board (PPECB).

“The impact is mainly on citrus fruit in the Eastern Cape, with some varieties down by up to 40%.” But, he said, for the period 1 April 2017 to 31 June 2017 there had been an increase of 6% in citrus fruit on inspected volumes compared to the same period last year.

“We have, however, seen a year-on-year decrease of 3% in pome fruit,” he said.
