Against a background of Transnet Freight Rail’s aggressive drive to win back cargo from road to rail, the extra-heavy truck sector is expecting to feel the pinch.
UD Trucks Southern Africa GM for corporate planning and marketing, Rory Schulz, told FTW Online the move would see the softening of extra-heavy truck sales as more commodities were moved by rail.
“At the same time though, it will increase sales in other truck sectors as the bulk will still have to be broken down and moved by truck in certain areas. We don’t think the tonnage moved by truck will change, but rather different types of truck will move it,” he said.
