ECU-LINE PORTUGAL managing director Luis Rodriguez is satisfied that there is ample business available in South Africa - but you often find it arising in the most unlikely places.
While travelling around Gauteng with his South African counterpart, Pete Sands, he decided to call in at a Johannesburg fishmonger to make a purchase - and walked out with a host of potential customers wanting more information on his line's cargo groupage operations.
It was a Portuguese establishment and we met up with a number of regulars who are in business in Johannesburg and knew very little about the shipping service we offer, says Sands.
Now Rodriguez is sending his sales manager, Nuno Pinheiro, to this country in September to discuss the service with the vast number of Portuguese business operations in Gauteng.
Ecu-Line introduced the direct weekly service between the Portuguese ports of Oporto and Lisbon to South Africa a year ago. Using Durban as a hub, transhipments are offered to Mozambique ports as well as Dar es Salaam, Mombasa and the Indian Ocean islands. Rail services are used for inland destinations in this country and neighbouring states.
