Government won't tolerate inefficiency - Merrifield

GOVERNMENT WILL not allow State Owned Enterprises to get away with inefficiency in future.
Giving this reassurance at the Maritime Law Association's recent annual general meeting, Dept of Public Enterprises chief director Andrew Merrifield said this sentiment was reinforced by Portnet's recent agreement to compensate shipping lines for berthing delays in Durban. He also mentioned that the question of black empowerment would be addressed in the restructuring process.
Although seemingly slow, the process was in fact relatively fast compared to restructuring initiatives elsewhere in the world, Merrifield said.
The Government is fully aware of the critical role that the ports play in boosting the country's competitiveness and will ensure that their restructuring is accelerated, he said.
