Giving support where it’s needed

As part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, Maersk Line has formed a strategic partnership with non-government organisation (NGO) Afrika Tikkun – which provides education, health and social services to children, youth and their families through centres of excellence in SA townships. Its latest effort has been in contributing towards the building of the Early Childhood Development Centre in Mfuleni – an historically disadvantaged area on the outskirts of Cape Town, where more than 45 000 people are trapped in a relentless cycle of poverty. Added to that, Maersk Line staff members have been involved in smaller projects such as volunteer days and Mandela Day to further assist the community. Their efforts at the most recent volunteer day were toiling in the garden so that fresh vegetables were provided to the kitchen staff; helping to prepare enough food to feed over 300 children and adults; assisting a group of grade 12 learners in preparation for future job interviews and searching for jobs; coaching the IT class in basic Microsoft office tools; and entertaining children with dancing and then competing in the highlight of the day for the 300 children, the five-a-side soccer tournament.
