PART OF Kuehne & Nagel’s project business over the last six years has been heavy lifts of up to 305-tons - destined for Sasol plants both in Secunda and Sasolburg, g.m. (projects) Ralf Franke told FTW. “These pieces were, in some cases, multi-modal, loaded by river-going barges in Europe; transhipped to heavy lift vessels; then transported to the site by road.” Reactors and transformers of up to 150-t per unit were also handled for a project of Siemens in Namibia. “This project had strict time constraints to have the various aspects positioned on foundations to avoid paying penalties “The transport engineering at the beginning of a project makes this satisfactory service possible.” Other examples listed by Franke include: Various dismantled excavators for different mining sites for Komatsu in SA; boilers totalling 6 000-freight tons for a brewery in Mozambique; equipment for transmission lines distributed for ABB to various sites in Namibia; filters of up to 80-t to Namibia; material for cement factories; giant, but sensitive, printing machines for the newspaper industry; and mining equipment to the southern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
