Gauteng transport authority on the cards?

The Gauteng provincial
government is seeking an
amendment to national
transport policy that
will allow it to establish
a Gauteng Transport
Authority.
Speaking at the Special
Interest Group (SIG)
Transport Forum in
Johannesburg last week,
provincial MEC for Roads
and Transport, Dr Ishmael
Vadi, said he had outlined
his proposal to the Transport
Portfolio Committee in
Parliament late last month
and was awaiting their
decision.
In June 2016, the premier
of the province, David
Makhura, and the former
Gauteng metropolitan
mayors signed a declaration
of intent to establish a
Transport Authority.
“A provincial transport
authority would allow for
improved transport planning
in the province as well
as better enforcement of
transport and traffic laws,”
said Vadi.
