Managing expectations from local communities and investing adequately in infrastructure are two of the biggest challenges facing Mozambique. The country’s huge gas finds in recent years have propelled it onto the international stage – but insurgents brought its biggest gas project to a grinding halt last year.“Obviously, the security issue in the north of the country is a concern and addressing it is crucial for projects to continue,” said Duncan Bonnett, a partner at Africa House. “However, it is not just about chasing the insurgents out, it is also about addressing the underlying socio-economic issues. There are a lot of expectations around what the gas developments mean for Mozambicans. Managing the expectations of people on the ground will be critical going forward, especially from a security point of view."
