Rehabilitation of the M1 Oxford and Federation Bridges in downtown Johannesburg will enter the final stages of construction early next month, according to a statement by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
“The R127-million project is now 75% complete,” said JRA managing director Sean Phillips.
He added that application of protective coatings on the bridges was currently under way and that work would move to the northbound section of the M1, necessitating a switchover of lanes, causing further traffic disruptions.
The JRA has advised that from the beginning of May, two lanes in each direction will remain open on the M1 while they enter the last stage of construction and the Ettrick Road on-ramp (southbound) will reopen. However, the northbound Oxford Road off-ramp will be closed.
