France should require a minimum service at ports to prevent the blockage of oil imports during labor disputes, reported Bloomberg. “France shouldn’t be left at the mercy of having to import oil products,” Jean-Louis Schilansky, head of the French oil companies association Union Francaise des Industries Petrolieres (UFIP), said at a press conference. “The port of Marseille is a nightmare. We have to solve the problem.” The oil refiners’ group is the latest to call on the French government to pass a law that would require workers to provide minimum service at ports during strikes. French ports including Marseille, Europe’s second-biggest oil import hub, have been hit since the middle of January with rotating labor action stemming from the implementation of a 2008 overhaul that was designed to move port workers into the private sector.
