Focus on back of port

With two new ship-to-shore

gantries achieving up to 45

moves an hour using double lift, the

focus in the port of Beira has turned

to the back of port operations in

order to improve productivity.

Cornelder de

Mozambique

(CdM) is

expanding the

container yard

to 13 000 TEUs,

and 144 reefer

points. This will take capacity to

450 000 TEUs next year.

It is also investing in new

information technology, according

to Jan Laurens de Vries,

commercial manager for the port

of Beira.

Stacks will be planned by the

port rather than the vessels.

“This will allow us to optimise

the way we plan the yard and

position each stack,” he says.

Productivity of the reach stackers

is also being

improved

through a system

which shows

the driver on a

screen inside the

cab the position

of the container to be lifted or the

space in which the container is to

be placed.

“These are some of the

incremental improvements over the

years which have led to increased

productivity,” he says.

INSERT

45 Container moves per hour at Beira port.
