Southern Africa is piloting a corridor trip monitoring system (CTMS) aimed at facilitating safe regional trade and transport.According to a spokesman for the Southern African Development Community (SADC), five member states are involved in the pilot project: “Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi are participating voluntarily in the pilot being implemented on sections of the Trans Kalahari, Walvis Bay-Ndola-Lubumbashi, Beira, Nacala and North-South Corridors.”The aim of the pilot project is to test the feasibility and functionalities of the CTMS with a view to improving it for full implementation in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa), the East African Community (EAC) and the SADC. The CTMS was developed under the Tripartite Transport and Trade Facilitation Programme (TTTFP) in 2020 as an electronic monitoring and surveillance system to facilitate the safe cross-border movement of goods and persons during the pandemic. Funding was provided by the European Union.
