Born: Lancashire UK. Educated: Accrington High School for Girls. First job: Stott & Smith Group UK. How did you become involved in the freight industry: Had an accounts position with a then small freight company in the mid 1980s and the MD suggested that I consider a promotion to his operations department. Has the industry opened up to women: Very few industries are still unavailable to women. Years ago the women did the "background" work in the office and the guys did the equivalent of networking at lunch and on the golf course. This gave women the opportunity to become involved in all aspects of the freight industry and opened up a whole network of their own through daily contact with agents, hauliers and suppliers. Industry challenges: Technical information – you cannot argue a point if you are not 100% sure of your facts! But I have learned from experience to be honest and request assistance if I am not sure. Influential person in shaping your career: Andy McRoberts and the late Kerry Curtis both of Truck Africa for having faith in my potential. Also my husband Bernard who has been very supportive even when work has intruded on personal time! Best personal achievement: Walking 250kms on the Camino De Santiago in Spain last year. Best professional achievement: Training and nurturing a staff member then listening to them having a knowledgeable conversation with a client always gives me a buzz! Recipe for success: Hard work, common sense and an ethical approach to business. Meaningful quote: Success is not achieved by contented people . Outside interests: Motorcycling with hubby, walking and reading (time permitting).
