Moves are afoot to address the danger of animals straying onto the road on the Botswana section of the Trans Kalahari Corridor, TKC executive director Bevan Simataa told FTW. “Tenders closed last month for the fencing of the road, and once approval has been reached, work will begin almost immediately.” Trade facilitation is top of the agenda for the TKC as it vies for its share of the increasing volumes moving from Gauteng to Namibia, Botswana and Angola. “More and more shippers are realising the cost-saving benefits of using an alternative routing – and we have been involved in a number of initiatives to further streamline border procedures,” he said. “We’ve seen an increase in traffic on the corridor, not only into Botswana and Namibia, but also into Angola where new construction projects are under way.
