Extra capacity to West Africa

The Western Cape’s agricultural and food and beverage industries have the potential to benefit significantly from a recently introduced weekly containerised service linking South Africa to West Africa and the Mediterranean. Safmarine’s enhanced 225 service, which was introduced in February this year, sails from Cape Town directly to Dakar and Algeciras. “This not only provides a fast and reliable connection to West Africa and the Med, but the service can also be used to connect reefer and dry cargo to the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and North and South America,” says Safmarine’s intra- Africa trade manager James Lewer. The new service – which offers ample reefer capacity on all six vessels – got off to a strong start in February with a number of valuable bookings for cargo to both West Africa and the Med, he added.
