Experienced staff have mentorship role

I do agree with Y Mohamed’s comments that 20 years’ knowledge coupled with the related expertise is valuable, but I would take it further – don’t compare it with matric but rather a BCom degree. Please don’t get me wrong. I encourage interns to be enrolled into the industry and it is important for the growth and development of the economy and country as a whole that we do accommodate and encourage students and graduates’ passage into the industry. The problem with a select number of agencies and industry leaders is that they discourage retaining experienced personnel, citing the need for fresh blood. Use experienced personnel as mentors to the students and graduates and reward them accordingly. Surely this would be the route to partially eliminate skills shortages? G Veeran
