Europe’s top cargo hub sees marginal drop in volumes

Frankfurt Airport in Germany.

Germany’s Frankfurt Airport (FRA) – the largest in Europe – saw a marginal drop in cargo volumes for 2015, declining by 2.3% to about 2.1 million metric tonnes.

According to a statement by the airport’s management company, Fraport AG, this can largely be attributed to weakening global trade and economic difficulties in some emerging markets

Furthermore, with 468 153 takeoffs and landings, aircraft movements in 2015 reached a similar level as in 2014 (down 0.2%).

Fraport AG's executive board chairman, Dr Stefan Schulte, said: “These figures reflect the ongoing consolidation activities of airlines, particularly the deployment of larger aircraft. Without weather and strike-related flight cancellations, the number of takeoffs and landings would have climbed by 1%.”
