If you’re exporting to the EU, there’s a new security system due to be implemented in all 27 member states on January 1, 2011. The new Import Control System (ICS) will facilitate the receipt of safety and security information in advance of the goods arriving in the European Union. According to information released by the British International Freight Association, it is the first step towards implementing the Automated Import System, which in the longer term is likely to include centralised clearance. This new ruling complies with the Security Amendment to the EC Customs Code whose aim is to increase the security of the global supply chain. According to Bifa, ICS will require that electronic entry summary declarations (ENS) are submitted to the first air or port of landing in the EU prior to the arrival of any cargo destined for, or transiting the EU.
