THERE’S A new hint that a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) between the European Union (EU) and the US could again be put on the political table. According to a report by Honor Mahony carried by bilaterals.org, closer economic ties between the two major trade areas, possibly resulting in an FTA, are being mooted by centre-right members of the German government. A free trade zone would be “a great project for Europe and the German presidency”, according to Matthias Wissman, head of the Europe committee in the German parliament. This is not the first time the idea of an EU-US free trade zone has been mentioned.
