Membership of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, a key player in the training arena, goes further than academic qualifications. Megan Harris, SA branch director of ICS, explains that to qualify for membership of the Institute it is necessary to write seven exams in total and then to apply. “It isn’t enough to pass the exams to become a member although it is a degree-equivalent course which is recognised internationally. You also need to be in good standing in the shipping industry before you can become a member. “The Institute’s motto is ‘our word, our bond’ and every member therefore needs to personify ethical business practices,” she says.
