Power utility Eskom expects a “significant increase” in export sales for the fourth quarter of the 2016 financial year, with cross-border sales having grown by 33% since the beginning of the year. The total cross-border sales increased by 970 gigawatt hours (GWh)
Providing a system status briefing earlier this week, CE of Eskom, Brian Molefe, said: “Eskom supply is making an increasing and positive contribution to supporting the economies of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and to offsetting the impact of the drought on the Kariba power station in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
He added that with progressive additional capacity coming online in South Africa, Eskom hoped to increase its exports, albeit with “a view to assess future sustainability”.
Chief financial officer of Eskom, Anoj Singh, was cited by Reuters news agency as saying that the electricity provider was projecting “quite a significant increase in export sales”, adding that in 2015 Eskom had achieved a 12% rise in export earnings.
