Emirates doubles cargo capacity

Cargo is a winner with new aircraft, writes Leonard Neill

EMIRATES CARGO has doubled capacity on the daily Johannesburg-Dubai flight following the introduction of the new wide-bodied A330-200 on the route.
The aircraft, described by Airbus as the most modern jetliner in the world, started flying on February 1.
It's a boost to our efforts, says Emirates Cargo South African manager Kum Naicker. We've worked under constraints until now with the Airbus 310 which allowed us seven tons of freight space per flight. This has now leapt to a minimum 14 tons daily. We've managed to keep our customers happy in the past. This means we can now make them feel delighted.
The Emirates Cargo record shows that only one claim has been paid out in 4,5 years of operations from South Africa. They have firm orders in place for 18 of the new airliners. Seven have already been taken into service while the remaining 11 will be delivered in stages up to the year 2002.
What should always be remembered is that Emirates takes full consideration of cargo requirements in addition to the passenger service when making decisions on new aircraft, says Naicker.
Our efforts here in Johannesburg came fully into the matter. There were very extensive discussions about the increasing volumes of cargo on the Johannesburg-Dubai route, and even with a full passenger flight, we will have our 14 tons each day from now on.
