There have been serious congestion delays at Pier 1 in the Port of Durban over the past two weeks, with trucks backing up some distance along the only access, Bayhead Road, according to the Durban Harbour Carriers’ Association (DHCA) – a specialised KwaZulu Natal division of the SA Association of Freight Forwarders (Saaff). Said chairman, Kevin Martin, MD of Freightliner Transport: “We had an emergency meeting on Friday (September 7), very well attended by DHCA members. It was a bit of a brain-storming session to try to help Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) solve their problems. “It’s really a case of too little space for too much volume coming in, compounded by 4-5-hour wind delays in the last fortnight.” But this has been an on-going problem for some time, so Martin described it as “a work still in progress”.
