THREE HUGE electrical transformers manufactured in Pretoria and destined for power stations in the United States are currently awaiting a vessel in Richards Bay harbour which will transport them in the first door-to-door logistics operation of its kind undertaken from this country, according to Andries van der Walt of forwarders FH Bertling.
The units were manufactured at Pretoria's ABB Powertech Transformers' works, where heavy equipment is developed in a programme for Eskom. They were transported in heavy vehicles to Richards Bay by Martinet Transport and are now awaiting the arrival of the charter vessel DBC Frisia which has self-loading cranes and is expected to depart for the US by March 14.
Van der Walt says that previous undertakings of this nature have seen power units delivered to US ports where they are offloaded and left to the consignee to arrange ongoing transportation. This operation sees the units handled from factory to site through a single logistics provider.
