Speedy retrieval and hand-over is key
KEVIN MAYHEW
THE DURBAN International Airport branch of Express Air Services (EAS) is celebrating its tenth year of operations on a high note with facilities for express and general airfreight. Says branch manager Alex Pillay, based at the company’s airport office: “We certainly have gained the confidence of the market over the past 10 years and enjoy tremendous support from the Durban freight community.” EAS offers a Same Day Express service (SDX) which guarantees that cargo will fly on the first available flight to its destination and a Fleet Freight (FFR) option designed for larger consignments sent during the day, which is ideal for the courier industry. A general cargo option caters for non urgent freight EAS in Durban offers a number of services outside its domestic operation. It provides daily connections into Southern and Central Africa through its partners Zambian Airways, Comair and Rwandair Express as well as connections globally through Qatar Airways. International destinations served by EAS and its airline partners include, Bujumbura, Entebbe, Kigali, Lusaka, Ndola, Windhoek, Harare, Dubai, Shangai, Europe, London, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Beijing. This global network allows Durban customers to lodge freight directly from Durban to these destinations. Catering for the all-important perishable export market, EAS has cold room facilities in Durban to hold the products for short periods. And according to Pillay, its network of such facilities is among the most extensive of all South Africa’s independent air freight operators. Without any dedicated domestic freighters serving the Durban market, EAS relies on passenger flights to link Durban and Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and George. Pillay believes that the location of the Durban branch, which enables it to retrieve freight directly from aircraft and hand it to customers very quickly, is key to providing a fast and reliable service to the market.
