SHIPPING & GENERAL TRANSPORT has built up its business as a one-call extension to the freight forwarder, offering an outsourced transport and warehousing solution. In terms of its warehousing facilities, managing director Daya Moodley believes the company is ideally situated just 5km from the City Deep terminal. Its 4500 sqm facility includes a racked, bonded warehouse, a transit warehouse for receiving imports and packing exports, a transport facility which houses 20 of its 60-strong truck fleet undercover, and a commodity warehouse for bulk storage and distribution. State-of-the-art technology is in place to secure the facilities at all times, and this includes a 'tamper-proof' computer system, on site armed guards and radio linkage to an armed response company. "It's all about providing total peace of mind and service satisfaction for our clients," says operations director Regan Moodley. And there is certainly room for extension of facilities based on market demand, he added. The company's core niche is the unpacking of imports and packing of exports. "It's the market we are trying to develop and involves an enormous amount of planning and strategising. "The company is frequently presented with specialised export packing projects for the clearing and forwarding industry. High end sports vehicles, antiques and specialised machinery are commodities that have earned us our stripes. "General cargo is our base load, but we have excelled in this specialist sector." Warehousing facilities are also available in Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. "Companies are looking for a one-stop shop. They know that if they assign a job to Shipping & General the job gets done. "We've gained brand loyalty among our clients, and have built the business primarily on referrals."
