Customs officials confiscated two large consignments of drugs worth over R18 million in two separate incidents at OR Tambo International Airport this week.
According to South African Revenue Services spokesperson Sandile Memela, officials noticed suspicious objects in three bags during a baggage scan of a male passenger arriving from Nairobi, Kenya.
Upon further inspection they found 12 plastic bags containing a white powdery substance.
The second incident saw a parcel declared as “gifts”, destined for Malaysia via courier and containing sachets of a white crystal substance.
“Drug tests confirmed that the substance was crystal methamphetamine,” said Memela. “The drugs and the passenger were handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation.”
