THE PORT of Richards Bay was closed on Monday, November 20 as a result of heavy rain and poor visibility.
Over the weekend weather conditions deteriorated with strong winds of up to 55 knots accompanied by driving rain. Outside the port entrance swells of 6 metres were reported, before the port authorities called 'time out' and shut the port until circumstances improved. Several yachts outside the port reported they were in difficulty and in one instance the United Arab Shipping Company general cargo vessel Arafat had to go to the rescue of a yachtsman who was at the mercy of the seas. Arafat, which was due in Richards Bay on Monday, November 20 was accompanying the stricken yacht at a reduced speed of about 2 knots.
