Crane driver Nokuthula Zwane is unfazed by the traditional male-dominated field in which she finds herself. “When female operators were introduced in this job you’d find that many men would underestimate the capabilities of women operating cranes. They didn’t think that they could do the job as well as men could, but this motivated me to prove myself even more.” The 26-year-old Pinetown resident spends her days ensuring that cargo is efficiently loaded and discharged from vessels at the Durban Container Terminal. She studied public finance and accounting at the University of Mangosuthu and has also studied public procurement through Unisa. When she is not working, Nokuthula enjoys reading and going to the cinema with her friends. CAPTION Nokuthula Zwane … ‘Many men underestimate the capabilities of women.’
