Trains will soon start running regularly on the Lüderitz line from the Northern Cape, says TransNamib chief executive officer Johny Smith.
Initially freight will be bulk (mainly manganese) from the Northern Cape via Ariamsvlei / Nakop.
The feasibility of moving reefers is also being investigated.
Transnet Freight Rail will be providing rolling stock, while TransNamib will handle the logistics on the Namibian side.
“The line is ready for business, and there is a new marshalling yard in Lüderitz, so the port is also open for business,” he adds.
