Diversified niches keep logistics major busy

IN THE highly competitive Botswana market, clearing and forwarding giant UTi is well positioned to take advantage of the numerous mining projects that are driving the county’s growth, says Botswana MD Mark Thompson. But while mining may have attracted a number of logistics firms to the region, UTi has built a solid business base on a range of diversified niches – the textile industry, support operations for mining companies, Botswana’s beef which is sought after around the world, and diamonds which are a key manufacturing commodity. Tobacco is a new form of manufacturing in Botswana. On the ground, Thompson feels that permits and clearing standing times are some of the main challenges confronting the freight industry in the country. There is also a skills shortage which is hampering efficiency. The recently re-formed BFFA (Botswana Freight Forwarding Association) has already begun to address the various obstacles to growth in the industry, with Thompson as one of its committee members. “ The roads in Botswana are a lot better than most of our neighbouring countries and Botswana has certainly placed a lot of focus on this over the past year,” says Thompson. “We have a very sound relationship with customs and we strive to be their business partner in the industry to make their work easier.” However, Thompson feels the shortage of skilled staff needed to assist with the EDI clearances is an industry-wide concern. The country, however, has not yet hit its stride, with the real fruits of the construction projects, manufacturing and mining still to come. “Botswana in the next few years is going to be a country to keep your eye on,” says Thompson. And the strength of the already strong BWP currency certainly bodes well for the future.
