The growing appeal of distance education is spelt out loud and clear in the latest figures from TutorShip, the distance education arm of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers. According to the ICS’s Fiona de Goede, 55 learners in three schools in South Africa are currently receiving support and tutoring from ICS for the beginners’ certificate course, Understanding Shipping, while 115 students have enrolled for the course in South Africa this year. “In addition 80 students have signed up for TutorShip courses, including the Foundation Diploma, the Advanced Diploma and the Professional Qualifying Exams,” she told FTW. Some 85 South Africanregistered students will sit the ICS exams in eight centres in Africa, including Namibia and Dar es Salaam. The ICS relies on industry support for the provision of facilities and staff to assist with the exams, she added.
