Dipuo Peters – to be or not to be?

Transport minister Dipuo Peters is under fire by the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu), with over 500 members marching to the Union Buildings in Pretoria earlier this week to call for her resignation.

Some sources have speculated that Peters’ appointment was part of a political reward system and wasn’t necessarily based on her qualifications. Thus, if she is not properly advised by qualified transport practitioners, would Peters simply be the victim of a poorly managed political system?

The call for her to step down comes in the wake of the R600-million Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) scandal around the purchasing of Spanish trains.

Peters has also been widely criticised in the freight and logistics industry lately for the proposed new regulation which would see the banning of trucks on roads during peak transport periods.

Industry organisations such as the Road Freight Association have said they will take the matter to court if necessary.

How do you think Peters has conducted herself in her role to date?  In your opinion, should she stay or go?
