Denmark goes digital to grow shipping register

Denmark is trying to grow its shipping register by digitising the paperwork in order lower costs, according to the deputy director general of the Danish Maritime Authority, Charlotte Ahrendt Steen.

"As one of the first in the world, we are making the move to digital registration with our new register of shipping, which we are now starting to develop.

“This will definitely reduce the administrative burden for those companies that have their ships registered under the Danish flag.”

At present, according to the maritime authority, shipowners are required to provide original legal documents with a record of ownership and value – which incurs courier costs.

Owners are also sometimes called to meetings with registering authorities.

The new digital register is expected to be in service by the end of 2020.
