Decarbonising the transport sector remains one of the most pressing environmental challenges, not only in South Africa but worldwide. The global impact of transportation on greenhouse gas emissions cannot be understated, with emissions growing by 8% year-on-year and rebounding to account for a substantial 37% share of total emissions in 2021.South Africa, like many other nations, faces significant hurdles in curbing emissions from the transport sector. Currently, transport stands as the third-largest emitting sector in the country, releasing nearly 55 Mt of CO2. These emissions contribute to over 10% of South Africa's national gross emissions, exacerbating the nation's environmental footprint.
