Death knell for specialised refrigerated fleet?

According to Drewry’s latest Reefer Shipping Market Annual Review and Forecast, the refrigerated (reefer) container shipping fleet has increased by 15% year-on-year - and projects growth could possibly increase to 20% by 2018.

Conversely, in the specialised reefer fleet – now an average age of 25 years old - capacity is diminishing, with no signs of any newbuilds.

Although seaborne reefer cargo grew 4.9% in 2014 and continued strong growth is forecast, Drewry is confident that the significant increase in reefer containership capacity will easily absorb this.

Given this, Drewry believes utilisation levels on the reefer containership fleet will remain virtually unchanged over the next few years at 20.4 to 20.6 cargo tonnes per thousand cubic feet equivalent of reefer container capacity.
