A multibillion rand factory was launched by the minister of trade and industry, Dr Rob Davies in Boksburg earlier this week.
The Khanyisa household care products plant – one of Unilever's four manufacturing plants in South Africa – is the company’s largest investment globally, worth about R1.4 billion.
According to Davies, Unilever benefited from the Department of Trade and Industry’s (dti) 12i Tax Allowance Incentive scheme, with a qualifying investment value of R1.2 billion, an investment allowance of R350 million, as well as a training allowance of R7 million for the Khanyisa plant.
He said in total Unilever had invested about R4 billion in manufacturing plants in the country and had received nearly R1 981 billion in incentives from the dti.
Paul Polman, CEO of Unilever, said that the company had seen a lot of growth in the emerging markets, accounting for 60% of the global market.
