WHILE DAL Deutsche Afrika-Linien is a well-entrenched name in local shipping circles as a steadfast founder member of the Southern Africa Europe Container Service, its lesser-known subsidiary, DAL-Transport, has established a market niche in the NVOCC (Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier) sector.
Established in South Africa two years ago, it offers an NVOCC service to and from southern Africa to destinations worldwide, with particular focus on the Americas.
"Basically we're looking for cross-trade traffic in and out of Africa, for containers and breakbulk, making use of DAL services where possible, but using whatever connecting carrier best serves the needs of the customer," Stephan Schiller, deputy m.d of DAL's agency in Hamburg said during a visit to South Africa recently.
